What I want to find out from my research:

Are some genres of podcast more successful than others, what are the most popular?

“In the third quarter of 2019, it was found that the most popular podcast genre was comedy, with 36 percent of respondents to a survey having listened to a podcast in this genre in the last week. News podcasts, as well as those focusing on society and culture, had been listened to in the last week by 23 and 22 percent of podcast consumers respectively” (Published by Amy Watson, Jun 4, 2020 statista.com).

Podcasting Industry Statistics

Back in 2006, only 22 percent of the adult population in the United States was aware of podcasting. By 2020, this figure had risen to 75 percent. Podcasting is an increasingly popular pastime in the U.S. and  there were an estimated 88 million podcast listeners in the country in 2019. (Published by Amy Watson,Jun 8, 2020 statista.com).

Getting started with a podcast & first year start up cost

A quality podcast, requires quality gear. Of course its entirely possible to have a podcast with a minimum set up, for example you can record and edit a podcast using just your phone. When it comes to editing your podcast recordings there is plenty of free softwares available, for instance audacity for audio editing.

People start making podcasting for a number of reasons, however when taking the mind map above into consideration, its entirely possible that people can see a podcast as an investment due to potential to turn it into a side income or full on career.

Why do people choose to listen to podcasts?

Using my existing knowledge and notes.People implement podcasts into their daily routine not only for entertainment, they allow for multitasking, provide background noise and can prepare you fro the stage in life or career, teach you about specific fields of study or career paths, inform you on world news/politics, teach you how to cook etc etc. The list will only grow the larger the number of podcasts rise.

What caused the rise in podcasts?

Using my existing knowledge and notes. The cause for the rise in popularity is due a few reasons. Platforms such as, Apple music, Spotify, Sound cloud, YouTube and Twitch.tv (live podcasts usually occur here) Made podcasts readily available (for free) and mainstream, whilst also providing new audiences to already established podcasts through deals and promotions. Because there is so much choice in the genres of podcast today it was inevitable that they would eventually blow up in popularity.

Because of the low entry cost in its starting ear and the opportunity for sponsorship, its no surprise why since 2019 nearly 200,000 podcasts have started up – with various success levels however.

What is the point of a Podcast?

Podcasts can either be very advanced and sophisticated, whilst another podcasts can be a group of friends with a simple set up, it doesn’t really matter as each will appeal to its own demographic. Every time a guest is featured on a podcast for a special episode they hope that it will give their podcast a bigger following and more notoriety, further expanding their brand. Ad revenue/sponsorships and product placement is how podcast host(s) make a living so by doing special episodes it can allow them to grow big enough to earn a living from podcasting.

Podcasting formats

Most podcasts follow a format. When I ran out of formats I can remember from podcasts I’ve personally listened to before. I then put these into a mind map which ive uploaded below. I sourced my additional information from Castos. 2020. 8 Podcast Formats To Consider For Your Show – Castos. [online] Available at: <https://castos.com/podcast-format/> [Accessed 4 December 2020].

Phones and the popularity of podcasts:

Taking the trends of this line graph into consideration its clear that since 2017 the upwards trend for smartphone listeners will still be on the increase, whilst less and less people use the less portable device options. Its interesting to see graphs like this develop as the podcasting industry still evolves.

Report

Current Skills:

  • Good creative ability and can visualize ideas in my head easily.
  • Good eye for detail
  • Open to constructive criticism/feedback and make changes as required. In task 9 and 10 I used a survey to gain constructive criticism which I plan to use when I work on improving how I use lighting when I render.
  • I can set myself a work process and stick to it. For instance, I proved in my unit 9 and 10 practical work that I have the ability to plan out what I want to model, am able to take inspiration from a reference images and artwork, which then allows to me create realistic models to the best of my ability -During this task I also proved that when working with multiple different models I have the creative ability to tie them all into one scene in a short time constraint.

Strengths and areas for improvement:

When it comes to using the 3D software i can say that modelling is definitely one of my biggest strengths but making my models appear photo-realistic with texturing and shading is what i need to practice, along with practicing my modelling skills routinely.

From my survey feedback I had some criticism to how the lighting and shadows appeared in my final render of the project. I have tasked myself with working on how my final renders turn out by striding towards creating more realistic shadows, whilst also modelling things which could give off light and add them to my scene. For example, lamps, fires or candles.

During unit 9 and 10 I improved heavily on the planning stage before commencing in any 3D practical work. Although it can be tedious I think its one of my main strengths since it gives me a plan of action and keeps me on track for completing work, which was useful in the short amount of time I had to create an environment.

Entry level position: Environmental Artist at Professional Technical Recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Taking briefs and designing new retail environments.
  • Using Vectorworks and Cinema 4D to create 3D visuals and floorplans.
  • Liaising with clients and colleagues to ensure projects are delivered on time.
  • Travel to supplier and customer sites, attending meetings and progressing projects.

Skills

  • Proven experience as a retail Space Planner, 3D Designer or Development Designer working for a retailer or consultancy.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience using Vectorworks and Cinema4D.

Personal development plan

At present I have a good understanding of Cinema4D and gave myself the task to create a simplified floor plan. When it comes to using Adobe software I have some experience in Illustrator and After effects but I need to improve upon my skills

When taking my current skills into account for this position, its clear that Id have to gain some experience with Vector works so that I can develop my architectural and landscape design abilities.

Selected Target Audience : The Revenant

Audience summary:

The audience for The Revenant is predominately male, due to the themes of the film and its character portrayal. The film has an age rating of 15+, however in Task 2 I predicted that the films target audience is likely between the ages of 20-30. This is due to nature of the film and its long run time, meaning its more of a commitment to watch as not the entire film is action/fighting.

The creative process:

This is the process which transforms an idea into its final form through a series of thoughts and actions. The creative process includes problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Ideas for creative production:

  • Commercial Art, such as a display window.
  • Advertising, TV commercials, print ads, digital ads, displays and billboards.
  • Media, video production or photography
  • Game Design, physical or digital
  • Graphic Design, visual design, such as a logo, sign or magazine cover.

Mind Map:

I started by looking at advertising opportunities which are available to the selected audience.

Mood Boards:

Sketches:

Proposal:

For my proposal is for a movie poster. I want it to serve the purpose to present the theme of the movie without giving too much away.I’m going to ensure that my design doesn’t appear too cluttered but at the same time I want to avoid having too much or little text. Keeping in mind the locations of where movie posters usually end up, its important that they’re memorable or unique as they’re in high traffic areas such as; billboards, bus stops, train stations and inside and outside of cinemas. I will make my production unique by using color to create energy and attract the eye, I will also experiment with a limited color pallet and bold lines to see what works best.

ABSTRACT:

In this essay I plan to explore all of the different genres available in the podcasting industry, at the time I’m writing this abstract essay, I can only think of a few basic podcast genres, such as comedy, sports, news, interviewing. Yet, I am certain that there is a much wider variety than these four I mentioned, as people are always innovating old ideas. Whilst taking an insight into what makes a good podcast, I want to discover why people listen and what the point of a podcast is, is it just for entertainment purposes? Personally, when I listen to podcasts, they are usually of the interview or talk show genre as once I find a guest or host with an interesting life experience(s), a unique career or anecdote. If I cannot find one which I am fully interested in, I find that podcasts can make for good background noise half of the time. In my opinion, the hosts or co-hosts are responsible for the level of success their podcast sees. However, I imagine that podcasts use their guest features or special episodes to not just provide content but to gain followers and notoriety, further expanding their business. I hope to find an insight into how people manage turn their podcast into a sustainable income. I will be using my research from the previous task (critical frameworks) to investigate all the various aspects of media podcasts cover. I want to further explore why podcasts have become so popular in recent years and the platforms which have allowed them to become so mainstream. I believe that its only right for me to also investigate the key formats that a podcast follows and its structure as they are becoming the ‘online radio’. For my research I want to look at some key areas which I haven’t previously mentioned. I am interested to see if some genres are more successful than others, or the top three genres currently. Another thing to look at would be to see the startup cost of a podcast and how much can be made from revenue. But like most popular things I want to take a look at the biggest names in the industry or biggest podcast shows globally. I will be using four main research methods when conducting my research for this essay. I’ll start with conducting secondary research which is when I’ll be looking at data which is already collected, for example, views from YouTube, downloads, and stream numbers to determine how popular the podcast is. Next, I will use quantitative research to see how much podcast creators earn from ad-revenue from their sponsorships or ad-reads. But I can also use quantitative research to measure the numbers a podcast pulls. I also want to use experimental research to see if certain age groups or genders have trends. For instance, if they have certain genres or podcast hosts they prefer. Then on the other hand I am going to use descriptive so that I can gather information and data on everyone.

The Different Genres in Podcasting

With almost everyone having access to the internet and a device in their pocket, you’ll find that nearly everyone does/has started listening to a podcast of some sort or have listened to one. Podcasts are playing a bigger role in people’s day to day lives than ever before. Since their recent increase in popularity, there have been multiple arguments made that believe that podcasts will soon replace radio shows or that they are to become the ‘online radio’ or the ‘modern radio’. It’s smart to predict that podcasts will only become more advanced, available, and influential in the upcoming years, meaning that they do stand a chance at replacing radio shows. The argument puts forward the claim that because traditional radio broadcasting has a limited airtime, they must try and appeal to as large an audience as possible in the short amount of time given, meaning that in most cases radio shows can feel unrelatable to a lot of people.Where as, with a podcast there is a lot more recording time available to the creator, allowing for a stronger connection to be built between listener and host quicker than one between radio show host and listener. Another point to be made is about how podcasts are a lot easier for people to access on the go.”Many local radio stations might have apps, but they can be unreliable… Spotify and iTunes are two of the easiest platforms people can access podcasts”. Amanda Mitchell (2019) Will Podcasts replace radio? Available at :https://easttennessean.com/2019/11/24/will-podcasts-replace-radio/ (Accessed 9th December 2020).

So not only are podcasts easier to access than radio stations, but podcast also shows allow for a great level of detail on subject matters of all different genres and can be listened to at anytime, anywhere. This is the premise of the essay and what I will be looking at, whilst also exploring the other aspects of podcasting.

As mentioned, podcasts can cover a variety of genres, from in-depth scientific discussions with leading figures in a field to fictional creepy stories. For instance, there are podcasts on; True Crime, Philosophy, Comedy, Education, Sports, Science/ Environment, Interview cast/Talk, Religion, History, News & and Politics, Audio dramas, Society/Culture, technology and anything else you can think of. In my research prior to the essay, I looked at which podcast genres were more successful than others. I found an article produced by Statista.com to aid me with my research. (Accessed 9th December 2020) The graph I took my information from is available here: https://imgur.com/dATgPlA. Taken from https://www.statista.com/statistics/786938/top-podcast-genres/#:~:text=In%20October%202020%2C%20it%20was,as%20sport%2C%20health%20and%20fitness.

Statista had put a graph together showing the most success podcasting genres in the US since October 2020. Taking the collected information, I found out that the top 3 genres currently are Comedy, News & Politics and True crime. True Crime is one of the biggest and most successful genres, the podcast episodes run off of a schedule were the host(s) go into detail on true crime anecdotes. These podcasts find their success through the fact that most people have a natural want to find out why and how something happened, and these stories allow people to do this without having to experience the trauma themselves. For example, they often go in depth into the breakdown of the murderer. Most of the time, News podcasts feature a group of hosts who on either a weekly or daily routine produce episode(s) where they discuss a particular event in the world at the time or just cover local events, (depending of what podcast you tune into.) Comedic podcasts can vary, depending of a who you choose to listen to. Since most of these episodes will be based on popular topics in pop culture and the news it takes into account what you particularly view as funny or comedic, as everyone has a different view.

One of the main reasons behind the rise in podcasts is the level of variety that they can provide. “Back in 2006 only twenty two percent of the adult population in the United States was aware of podcasts, by 2020 this figure had risen to seventy five percent.” (Amy Watson, 2020).
It is also estimated that monthly eighty eight million adults in the United States listen to podcasts. With such a big market emerging I didn’t take long for big names in the industry to start emerging out of the cracks, for example, Dr. Death, which focuses on telling True Crime stories. Hosted by Dr. Fata. Another big name in the industry is Joe Rogan with The Joe Rogan Experience, his podcast features guest from all different fields of life/work meaning that each episode can delve into a new genre. The Dan Bongino show, a News & Politics podcasts, hosted by Dan Bongin an American commentator. Each of these three as some of the biggest names in their industry, provided by Podcastinsights (2020) Available at: https://www.podcastinsights.com/top-us-podcasts/ (Accessed 9th December 2020).

When something goes mainstream it doesn’t stop, this same trend also goes for podcasts. One of the biggest indisputable contributors to the rise of podcast is the influence that major platforms had on the industry, such as; Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, Amazon Audible and Twitch.Tv made podcasts readily available and accessible for free instantaneously. These platforms also provided already established podcasts with new audiences and a new platform to branch out to.

So, what makes people want to listen to podcasts?

There are all sorts of reasons why someone might choose to listen to a podcast or incorporate them into a part of their daily routine. Podcasts aren’t only a source of entertainment for some people. By nature, all podcasts allow for multitasking and can provide good background noise. Yet podcasts can diversify themselves. For instance, whilst one podcast can prepare you for the next stage in life or career, another can be used to teach you about a specific field of study. Because podcasts can be so personal there isn’t a distinct ‘point’ to a podcast or a list of fundamentals one must follow since they can either be very advanced/sophisticated or very simple, each approach to the industry will appeal to its own demographic. So its up to someone what they decide to listen to.

Once a podcast gains enough traction it can begin to be monetized via sponsorships/ad reads or in some cases an entire show can be brought by a platform in multi-million-dollar deals. However, in the early stages a podcast still has the opportunity to generate money. Merchandise sales can generate a decent amount of revenue, whether it’s from selling clothing, or providing courses and services. Direct support is also a way that small podcasts can start earning from their work, using monthly subscription services which will allow subscribers access to early or premium episodes not available to everyday listeners. However, most of the time when a podcast has a has a guest feature on an episode, they hope that it will benefit the podcast in the long run, they hope that these episodes will cause the podcast to gain traction resulting in them gaining new listeners and notoriety from it, further expanding their brand. When researching means of generating income from podcasting I created a mind map which ive attached in this essay: https://imgur.com/a/tjdleHi . When creating my mind map, I used both my own understanding of how a podcast can generate money as well as ideas from castos.com and their article on “How Much Money Can Podcasters Make And How Do They Do It?” Which is available here : https://castos.com/how-much-money-can-podcasters-make/

In conclusion “The Different Genres in Podcasting” provide the industries audience with hours upon hours of content whilst also promoting the opportunity to bring members of communities together. Each genre has its own uses, for instance one podcast can be used to keep people updated on worlds news and pop culture, through a serious manor with a high-quality network production team. Whereas another can be the complete opposite, the point of this podcast could be to make people have a laugh after a day of work or on their commute. As I stated initially, there is no fundamentals as to what a podcast must achieve as each podcast will find its own specific audience and then cater towards their needs. Even if a “recipe for success” is not followed, it will still find dedicated listeners, who feel connected to the content and create a commitment with themselves to keep tuning in each week. In essence, the finding the right genre makes it quite easy for an audience to fall into place.

Critical Frameworks

Genre

Genre covers a style or category of art, music or literature. Yet it covers all aspects of media activities such as games. For example, a new genre can bring new audience members into a franchise – Before 2009 Call of Duty was a first person shooter multiplayer game but with Black ops ones release in 2009 they added a whole new sub genre to their game “CoD zombies”. This was an attempt entice a new audience to their game through the use of the horror genre, and it worked. Genre is very diverse and what I personally find interesting is how it can be used to fix/ compare audiences. An issue which can appear in genre is over simplification or appealing too much to genre stereotypes. For example in late 20th century horror films shared the same style of killer and ‘final girl’ scenarios, being known as “slasher films.”

Narrative

By definition, Narrative is a spoken or written account of a story and can cover both fiction and non fiction. A good use of narrative has the ability to raise the carry a weak game or film. For instance, a low budget film might have ‘cheesy’ or bad practical effects a good enough plot / captivating story can distract the viewer from this or make up enough for what it lacks. A positive of a narrative is that it costs nothing to develop a good one. Narrative can be used to provide an engaging writing style which is relevant in current media trends. With so many options available to audiences of streaming services an original narrative with good writing can make a movie or series good and stand out since now almost everything on streaming services has the same level of practical effects, therefore, a weak narrative is usually always a bad thing, although this does depend of what genre of movie is on screen. What i find interesting about a good+strong narrative is how it can invite audiences into a world – again im more interested into its uses rather than what it is literally.

Representation

Representation is the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or the action of speaking on behalf of someone. One of the main issues of this subject is negative representation, as it can go very political with how something or someone is being presented. For example stereotypes or certain historical documentaries (yet this is usually seen in less recent media activities). Yet on the other hand, representation can be a positive or educational thing. This is done by portraying a certain group or movement through media. For example, soldiers in war movies have their bravery portrayed and their narrative told. I dont share an interest in either positive or negative representation but I value its importance.

Audience

An audience is the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event, such as; a play, film, or concert. But its also the audience of a brand/product, both being equally as important. An audience has to be appealed for/to, as the audience is in control of the success a business or brand sees. Audience management is important as it allows for you to get a clear focus on what your brand will serve and means that an audience is kept at a manageable scale. However, an issue which appears when analyzing an audience is that you cannot analyze an audience in an uniformed way every time, not everyone can be categorized into groups causing inaccuracies among consumers. Both target audience and audience analysis are aspects of this media topic i find interesting.

Regulation

Regulation is the rule or direct ive made and maintained by an authority, for example, wages, pricing, development approvals, employment, production standards and military forces and services. Regulation is important because they ensure the delivery of public goods and services, underpin markets, ensure employment and protect rights and safety of citizens. However, an issue which i could see when researching was that commonly the people in charge of regulating can be disconnected from society or the working class due to their position so things like wages and pricing could come under some scrutiny. Personally, i think that things should be regulated and that they’re definitely important in today’s society as it advances.

Technology (including Digital Media)

There are three types of Digital Media, the first being on media, paid media and lastly earned media. Digital Media is in our everyday life, examples of it being; video games, digital video, social media and nearly every other type of digital storage, such as mp3 or electronic books. Digital Media are the tools which establish digital presence, the public wants to see it used to facilitate more effective business interactions and communications with the government. With the distribution of digital media on the increase it wont be long until it will outpace the sales of print newspapers, magazines and books. Meaning that in the long run these industries will see lower employment rates, or mass redundancies. Something that interests me about Digital Media is its potential to re-engage citizens in their communities by using its tools to bring everyone together. These tools being, websites, online marketing and apps etc.

Production/Distribution/Exhibition

Production, is the very beginning of the movies life cycle, its the funding stage of a new movie. Distribution overs everything that happens in between production and exhibition, including acquiring legal rights, marketing and distributing copies of the film to cinema, this all takes time. The final stage is exhibition this is the cinema release of a film, marking the final stage of a films journey from idea to audience. When i was researching the definitions, I began to see issues with the development process. Because of streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon video, Hulu etc, providing instant releases, mostly produced by themselves so that they become instant exclusives, because of this their customers have became accustomed to the instant delivery of content. So the idea of having to wait for a movie to be produced, then come out in your local cinema, pay for the overpriced tickets and food it wouldn’t surprise me going to the cinema becomes less common with the rise of streaming services, especially in current global circumstances.

Marketing and Promotion

Both Marketing and Promotion are very different and it is important to not confuse the two as the have different roles. Marketing handles product development, pricing, promotional strategies and is also in charge of how the product or service will be shipped. On the other hand, promotion is usually done by advertising agencies. These agencies are in charge of developing brand awareness and buying advertising/ advertising strategising. Promotion can be done through, advertising, press releases, consumer promotions (contests and discounts), trade discounts and freebies. The idea behind promoting a brand or product is to make people aware, and to attract and induce them to buy the product in preference over others. An issue with promotion is that products require different promotional approaches. For example, convenience or shopping goods will usually be promoted through mass marketing, where as high-end specialty goods require personalized selling. Marketing also has its issues, with one of its biggest being pricing. For instance, the rising in food costs can have major impacts on vulnerable families, pushing households further into poverty and hunger. Both of these are vital functions for businesses but i find promotion the more interesting of the two because of the advertising side of things.

Uses and gratifications

  • What does the theory suggest?

Instead of researching what the media does to the audience, this approach studies what the audience does with the media. This approach also takes accounts of peoples personalities and personal needs, etc.

  • Strengths of this approach?

The audience is seen as active, and reasonably intelligent. Life experience in general is regarded as more influential than the experience of media. The pleasures that the media offer audiences are not regarded as negative!

  • Weaknesses of this approach?

Too much optimism about the ‘power’ and ‘choices; of an active audience can distract us from the power certain texts have, or the influence that media institutions and ownership may have on texts and understandings.

Reception analysis and ethnography

  • What does the theory suggest?

Audiences are seen active producers of meaning, rather than as merely consumers of media meanings. They make sense of media texts according to their social position( in terms of their identity) and their gender, race, age and class/

  • Strengths of this approach?

This approach values highly the specific, personal and contextualized responses of individuals and groups. People’s life experiences are important influences which enable them to make active choices as members of media audiences.

  • Weaknesses of this approach?

Similar problems to the uses and gratifications approach in that more emphasis is given to the responses and reading of the audience rather than to the institution aspects of media. Some researchers can get sidetracked into analyzing audience lifestyles.

Research into game production and profit

Counter Strike Global Offensive:

CSGO is the forth title in the Counter strike franchise, released in the summer of 2012 it still is the most successful of any other Counter Strike instalments. CSGO is often referred to as “the game that never dies” due to its 8 year reign as on the the most popular PC fps games ever seen. Today the game still sees a rise in players on recently celebrating having 1.3 million players during a 24 hour period during the global lockdown.

Developed by Valve Software and Hidden Path Entertainment, since its released Valve have continued to support the game, releasing new maps and weapons, along with bug fixes and balancing changes. However Valve doesn’t make its only profit through individual game, in 2013 it released its biggest and most influential update ever in the history of its life cycle the “Arms Deal” update this paved the way for micro transactions to come into play. The update brought in reskins of weapons and knives in the game, giving them a new a fresh look. But the only way you could obtain these highly sort after items was through testing your luck at gambling. In sort, how it would work is you’d pay around £2 pound to open a case which could either obtain a 20p skin or £200 skin. With it being harder to make profit from cases valve had also released a market place for owners of these expensive skins to sell them on to buyers at a chosen price, this price Valve or steam would take a cut out of, and this is how Valve ends up getting a lot of their profits. With such a market place the game began to appeal to not only competitive or casual gamers but also people who enjoy collecting and trading skins, having people invest tens of thousands into their in game inventories, later selling them on for profit.

How much did it cost to develop CSGO?
There was never a plan to ‘make’ Counter strike, it was originally a mod on the game Half Life 2 (developed by Valve) although it was then taken over by valve who turned the franchise into what it is today. The figures of how much it cost to develop CSGO aren’t readily available to the public unlike the budget for GTA V where Rockstar was very open about its $265 Million budget – and its $6 billion profit. Fans are always creating mods, maps and new weapons for the game which you can use in offline servers so it shows that if you have enough time and the skills you could develop a game like CSGO in your own time for free using current game engines such as Unreal 4.

How much did CSGO make in profit.
The most recent report of how much valve has earned off of CSGO since 2012-2018 is 414 million dollars world wide. With no plans for a 5th Counter strike announced or known to fans it will be interesting to see where the game is in another 5 years time.

What awards has CSGO won.
In 2015 the game won “ the fans choice esport game of the year 2015” award at the game of year awards

How does CSGO continue to say popular in 2020
Eight years later, Valve continues to support the games esport scene massively, whether that’s through their own Valve organised tournaments or by sponsoring third party tournaments such as Faceit Pro League or ESL Pro League, at these the best players from all around the world play for cash prizes and trophies. With reports of players being in multimillion dollar contracts and earning six figures deals its no surprise the game still sees so much support and love from its fans as its working its way to being on the biggest esports of all time, just under League of Legends which is a giant within the scene.

All current platforms games are available on:

  • PC
  • PS4
  • XBOX 1
  • Nintendo

Pros & Cons of each:

Pros

PC;
PCs offer the best overall performance out of all the others mention above, with the ability to always take out and upgrade parts gaming pcs will always be superior over both PS4 and Xbox. There is also no subscription required to use the features of your pc, unlike things such as Xbox Live or PlayStation-Plus. Due to the nature of PC gaming new updates and content usually gets released earlier on PC or PC only test servers such as the Technical test servers, giving players the ability to try out new content before its even been launched to consoles. Another pro of PCs is that marketplaces like steam always have sales or events on, meaning that users spend a lot less for games they could be having to pay full price for on the PS store for example.

PS4;
PlayStations 4s main selling point to a lot of its audience is the fact that it has its own exclusive titles, such as, The Last of Us. Another way that Sony rewards its PS plus members is with monthly free games and priority for new maps on Call of Duty. ( one of the biggest names on console gaming for the past decade) This deal Sony has with Activision means that everyone else has to wait a few more months to play this new content.

Xbox 1;
Similarly to PlayStation, Microsoft provides its own list of exclusives games which it shares with PC owners, in fact one of the biggest names in gaming, Halo was an Xbox exclusive, which is now also releasing its titles to Windows PCs.
Nintendo;
Nintendo arguably has the best list of exclusive games out of the three mentioned prior, titles such as Mario, Animal Crossing and Pokémon are a massive selling point for its customers as its only ever going to be available on the newest platforms being released that selected year. Its important to note that unlike the prior platforms I listed before, this is the only one of the four which can be portable, such as the Nintendo Switch released in early 2017.

Cons
PC;
Although better than consoles a good gaming PC can be very expensive based on a few factors, what games you’re wanting to play, if you plan to render or edit from your PC and if you’re going to prebuild or build it yourself. Another downside to PC gaming is how different game developers use different game launchers, on my PC I have 5 in total, a downside to this is that some launchers work better than others and not everything is in one place, unlike the market places on consoles being all launched from the consoles OS.
PS4;
One of the biggest let downs to the PS4 is the requirement to pay to play online, this wasn’t required with the PS3, However on its latest generation console I found myself having to play £60 a year on top of be buying the £30-60 game in the first place. Because every 5 years consoles are having to upgrade to compete with one another and PCs you’re always required to buy the newest release in order to keep in touch with your friends or play the latest game in your favourite franchise, unlike a PC where the power of your system doesn’t dictate if you can or cant talk with your friends still.

XBOX;
The Xbox shares the same cons as the PS4s does, whilst also being to weaker of the two consoles, having some games displayed at a lower resolution compared to PS4.

Nintendo;
One of the biggest complaints Nintendo usually face is because of how it handles its older games, leaving games which should be on sale buy now, full price – years after its original release date. (this only occurs if you buy through a Nintendo retailer or marketplace.)

My preferred platform:
PC:

What I played during lock down,
Counter Strike Global Offensive – Valve
Valorant – Riot
Overwatch – Blizzard
League of Legends – Riot
The Forest – Endnight games
Grand Theft Auto V – Rockstar

The Revenant – Target Audience

I feel like The Revenant is most likely preferred by men because the film contains lots of action/violence and this is favored by men. The story line of the movie is based on one mans survival through nature, weather conditions and other men. Because of this i feel like it would also make the film appeal more to men due to its resemblance of the ‘alpha male’.

However, I wouldn’t like to limit the audience of the film to only being male. Women also seem to like this film, if not equally the same amount as men, I think this might be a result of how The Revenant was filmed, for instance its shot in a very cinematic way, with beautiful scenery, I feel like this would appeal to women more than men.

The film has an age rating of fifteen, this is on the grounds that it contains sexual content, violence, profanity and frightening scenes. I think the films target audience is definitely more geared towards the younger generation (20-30) because of the influence of life around them, for instance; social media, video games and other films aimed at the same generation.

In my opinion, financial status wouldn’t really have much of an impact on the films target audience, this is mainly because The Revenant does not go into detail on those things nor does it really mention them.

Although i dont think the film is aimed at people who live in a specific location, i believe that where you live would impact your feelings towards the film, however i could imagine that people who live in cites or in heavily developed areas (far away from the countryside) may find the film captivating solely because of it use of scenery and landscapes. The cast also has some big names on it such as ,Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Will Poulter. This is important as all 3 of these actors have either played big roles in successful western movies or series – this is an important note as fans of their other works may want to watch the new Leonardo DiCaprio film for example.

The movie was one of the most popular films released in 2016, despite it being released in January, the movie grossed over 533 million USD worldwide. The trailer has amassed almost 25 million views (as of 8th of October) having 71 thousand likes and only two thousand dislikes.

When looking at what The Revenant covers, one of its primary themes is the different jobs in the film and their portrayal. Both Fur trappers and soldiers take up most of the screen time so therefore i can see people who may share similar jobs being interested to see how its developed over time or are just interested in the history of the occupation.

Iron Harvest – Target Audience

I feel like because the game is situated in an alternate reality in the time period after the first World War, the plot is going to naturally be geared towards people intrigued by the history of the first world war meaning that its going to have a higher male player count most likely. Yet due to the PEGI rating being 16+ its going to most likely have an adult audience.

However, the game has an in-depth story whilst emerging the player inside a real time strategy game play. With gaming being predominately focuses and targeted towards men its not improbable that the age group will be 18-30 when it comes to Iron Harvest players. Yet as i mentioned earlier, the story telling aspect of the game being such a key focus by the development team i can see it being appealing to other audiences, such as, people who play novellas.

When taking someones financial situation into consideration, the game being a new release (January 2020). It has a high price take of nearly £50 for the base game. Which i believe may limit the games community to those who are familiar in RTS games but the game might struggle branching out to other mainstream gaming communities, like sandbox games or MOBAS.

screenshot taken October 2020

In my opinion, with that i grasped from the representation of Germany in the games trailer, it displays them as the antagonists of the game, or at least what mission was shown in the trailer. The soldiers in the trailer wore uniforms similar to those worn by the Germans in World War One, or the design has clearly been inspired by it. Because of this the game might not be as successful in Germany because of what they’ve seen in the trailer, making them interpret the game negatively. In the trailer, the opening scene shows the soldiers invading a town and shooting the villagers dead. With this kind of representation it gives off negative connotations towards the actions of Germany in the first World War, even though the game is set in an alternate reality.

Since its release date at the start of this year, its earned itself a lot of positive and high stared reviews on online review sites or markets on steam, and having a 92% recommendation on Google and a page of 4 or 5 star reviews. The game itself is very unique therefore i believe that the lock down in March may have boosted the games success as people needed something new to play once they’d got bored of their other games in their library.

The Iron Harvest official cinematic was featured on IGN, IGN, being a massive influence in gaming media whilst also being a massive YouTube channel with over 14 million subscribers it was going to have some traction. The trailer dropped the 29th of July this year and so far as earned close to one million views with 30 thousand likes and only 500 dislikes.

Battlefield V War in the Pacific – Target Audience

Being arguably one of the greatest names in current gaming industry, EA’s newest chapter in Battlefield 5 explores the War in the Pacific which took place near the end of the second World War. The trailer provides a cinematic experience but also focuses on what the player can expect and will experience, they know what their player base wants to see, making it very clear that the developers know their target audience and how to promote new in game content.

With the market of first person shooters being very competitive, Battlefield manages to appeal to both younger and older generations of players due to how long the franchise has been around. With its first game (Battlefield 1942) being released in 2002 the game has seen nearly two decades of success and has built its thriving community upon it. Meaning that, if you’ve been around since the beginning or just now getting involved you can jump right in a learn the latest game just as the veterans do. I believe that Battlefield manages to retains its player base due to all the various styles of play the game promotes, such as driving a tank, piloting a fighter jet or getting involved on the ground in first person combat.

Even if multiplayer games aren’t appealing to parts of the audience its captivating campaigns provides hours of content and replay ability for players whenever the next game releases.

Since its a first person shooter its gameplay is more geared to males due to most of them growing up with previous Battlefield games or Call of Duty games when playing video games was only really targeted towards boys.

Unlike previous Battlefield games having the requirement for players to buy the Premium pass to get new updates and maps. Battlefield 5 has structured their game around a free content pass. Meaning that once the base game has been brought by the player then they can expect new chapters to be released every few months, such as the War in the Pacific chapter in this case. Therefore, this kind of content release means that once the player has the game they’re not expected to pay more for new updates unlike its competitors. This means that someone with a less disposable income can get the same experience as every other player. This is a good stride for games in general as having to pay for content that should be expected can cause lots of negative publicity about game developers if it seems like they’re creating cash grabs.

When the trailer dropped last year fans saw it as rejuvenating their game, it took Battlefield 5 back to its roots. Taking players back to the same map the very first game took place on, just bigger and better. It was a shining light for fans showing that there is hope for what was left for Battlefield 5s lifecycle. Since the announcement trailer for chapter 5 its earned over 11.3 million views since uploaded, November 2019. Yet the trailer has also achieved a higher like to dislike ratio than the original Battlefield 5 announcement trailer. The original game trailer faced a lot of backlash from the community due to how it approached its World War Two setting. Having fans react this negatively to how the game wasn’t historically accurate shows that a predominate amount of the community finds realism important due to the immersion it can provide.

Chapter 5 has over 250 thousand likes to 13 thousand dislikes. Comparing this to Battlefields 5 release trailers like to dislike ratio of 335 thousand likes to 560 thousand dislikes. In the comment section of chapter 5 you can see fan wishing that this was how the was originally presented, portraying battles of the second world war in reality.

Furthermore, when I was researching into the community’s feedback to the trailer I came across a reaction video where the creator got their Dad to react to both the Battlefield 5 announcement trailer and then the War in the Pacific trailer and even though he doesn’t play the game and probably isn’t the target demographic he still preferred the second trailer, showing appreciation for the historical accuracy. This supports the claim that most people prefer historical accuracy to immerse them in the games experience rather than just photo realistic graphics.

When taking what the trailer portrays it doesn’t show a victory of the battle, leaving it up to when the players play as both sides to decide the outcome. Meaning that I cant see someone’s geographical location coming into consideration as the trailer depicts both the Americans and Japanese as being heroic. This is seen when the pilot flies into the missile, saving everyone on the ground. And then when the Japanese soldier used the katana. As I stated before, I cant see anyone from the relevant sides not wanting to play since the trailer shows balanced representation. Unlike with the previous Iron Harvest trailer where the soldiers in the German inspired uniforms could be seen as the antagonist/ ‘bad guys’.

(1)Selected Trailer – The Revenant

The director of the movie described the theme of his film being primarily based on survival and spirit which rose through physical pain, he told the actors they were “going to be in pain and that he planned to film it”. He made sure he had them immersed in the wilderness, he had them surrounded by it. This was because any false moment would cause everything to fall apart.

The opening scene begins with a character frantically running through a forest, the camera angle is low to the ground and is ahead of the man running, rifle in hand, you can tell from that he is running from someone or something,as he’s seemingly checking behind himself as he sprints. This suspense is then built upon as the footage is pieced with the drums beating in increasing tempo, the music gives the scene a deeper sense of emotion, preparing the audience for the action which is coming as the suspension builds. It then cuts to horses riding into what seems like an attack on a camp or base. Its only as the drums come to an end that we hear the first voice line of the trailer. It’s the character from the opening scene yelling “get the boat, move!”. This dialog alone infers that this character is in command of his men as they all follow his order, running towards the last boat left during the ambush. As the camera focuses on the boat we can see and hear rifles and bows firing at each other. If you pay enough attention to detail, then its clear that the men carrying bags and bundles of furs onto the boats as the scramble aboard.

The colour pallet throughout the trailer doesn’t really change, it consists of dark browns, green and grays with the only bright colours being either the snow, sky or campfires. This was mostly down to the time the film was set (early 19th century) and the location it was set in. The costumes the men are wearing seem to be all the same colour. Brown. Whether this is because of the nature of their job being fur trappers or the muddy forests they camp in.

The events of the movie take place in 1823, in Montana and South Dakota. We know that the movie is inspired by real events, as mentioned in the final part of the trailer. The movie is based upon the story of Hugh Glass, an American fur trapper and explorer in the early 19th century. The territory was inhabited by indigenous people, and the French and English, it had very little laws and rules. This land became the interest for the fur trapping trade, which was a massive sauce of income, it worked as the ‘pre gold-rush’ in a lot of ways.
The premise of the film is revenge, it follows Glass 1500 miles through the wilderness in pursuit of the men who left him for dead after he was mauled within an inch of his life by a bear.

One of the most notorious and memorable scenes in the movie the when Hugh Glass is attacked by the grizzly bear, the scene is intense and violet, but worse than that this is an event which happened to the real-life protagonist. The scene was done entirely through stunt men and CGI, the actor was strapped to a harness attached to cables and yank around. The sound for the bear was created initially with real bear sounds and then combined with other animal noises and the mother bear was voice acted by the sound designer from The Revenant. He claims to of taken over 200 takes of him making grunts and roars for the mother bear, having on two being used.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is revenant-bear-attack.jpg

The Revenant trailer highlights the difference in culture between the Natives and the European fur trappers, the trailer also does a good job portraying some of the conflicts. This is apparent in the first scene when the Natives attack the fur trappers camp site by the river.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is the-revenant-trailer-screencaps-dicaprio-hardy2.png

Representation plays a key part in the entire movie, yet its used heavily in the trailer to make the Native Americans seem like that’s who the audience should have a hatred towards as they attacked the campsite in the first scene of the trailer and the movie. This was a dangerous move as first impressions last and it could’ve easily been perceived as another American movie portraying the Native Americans as violet and aggressive during the 19th century colonization of the North America. Though as the trailer progresses we see that the original emotions felt by the audience are shifted towards John Fitzgerald, one of the men who left him for dead.

(2) Selected Trailer – Iron Harvest Official Cinematic

Opening Scene

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is cap-1.jpg

The trailer opens with a wide shot of a 20th century farming town, surrounded by a dense forest. This gave of the illusion that it was a peaceful town preparing for a harvest, as the name “Iron Harvest” would suggest.

To accompany this wide shot of the town, audio begins to play of a child singing as they’re playing with their toys in the grass. A gradual suspense begins to build as the music changes from peaceful to dark and eery, indicating that something bad is going to happen. The trees start swaying as if something inside the woods is ploughing through them, something unknown. When suddenly and explosion fills the street, covering it in a shroud of smoke, a group of soldiers emerge and begin to open fire on the civilians. Panicked the child runs into the forest but as the soldiers move closer to his position the music grows louder and louder – becoming more intense with each step they take. Sound plays a massive roll within the opening minute as its used to deceive the audience initially yet later places them right on the edge of their seat as they hopelessly watch.

As the boy runs deeper into the forest the audience begin to fear more and more for his safety as just a few scenes prior to this we saw most of the town get obliterated by the enemy fire and artillery, showing just how ruthless and relentless the soldiers seem to be.

The music cuts, as the boy bumps into resistance fighters, judging by their uniforms, who signal for him to be quite whilst also comforting him.

Foreshadowing is also present in the trailer as the child was playing with two different types of robots, pretending as if they were fighting each other, this scene happens later on in the trailer when the boy is saved and the battle commences, just as things are looking rough for his saviours the real life version of his toy appears Infront of him as it prepares to run into battle, buying them enough time to escape.

The screen cuts to black as a tree falls on top of the camera shot as the boys screams fade.

When the next shot appears, the boy is alone with his toy in a clearing having made it out of the forest. Its only when the audience see the fear in his eyes that the camera changes to the final cinematic shot that we see giant towering machines, way bigger than any seen before, patrol across a field, leaving it up to the audience to judge whether it’s over – or just beginning of an invasion. Either way the shot portrays just how hopeless the boy is compared to this diesel fueled monster.

Putting the trailer into context

Iron Harvest is an alternative take on the history of the 1920s, taking inspiration from this time of industry change and progression, the fiction characters find themselves in the aftermath of the great war (World War One). Huge machines created to serve humanity, have only lifted warfare to another level and the “war to end all wars” has ended nothing.
When taking a closer look at the enemy soldiers who attacked in the trailer its clear that the developers planned to portray them as German soldiers. This becomes more apparent if the uniforms are compared.

The Iron Harvest trailer represents the soldiers who are in German inspired uniforms, as being the aggressor and rendering them the enemy in the minds of the audience. This is much like the Germans in many WW1 films and games. Because of this it also makes the allies out as the saviors, as when they saved the fleeing little boy from the beginning.

(3) Selected Trailer – Battlefield V War in the Pacific.

The entire trailer is captured within game engine, it takes the player through some of the most iconic battles in the Pacific theatre as both American and Japanese forces. The trailer highlights all the different possible plays to play the game, whether you prefer the FPS ground based combat, driving tanks and boats or getting involved in dogfights above the island. All four ways to play the game come into one to create the ultimate battlefield experience. The trailer is used to hype up the games newest free content, adding new weapons, vehicles , character models and most importantly maps to fight on.

The beginning segment of the trailer shows both sides preparing to go into battle, we see the American landing craft moving in as the Japanese forces move out to defend the islands. Immediately the trailer spirals into the chaos of war with explosions, gun fire and screaming as they crawl up the beaches in land.

The game-play trailer makes sure to capture the vibrant colors of the pacific. The map developed by Dice is packed with color. The sea is crystal clear with cloudless skies, this is contrasted against the dark grey landing craft and battle ships, the vegetation is a blend of both bright green and dark greens with the occasional colored shrub. This gives of the illusion that the islands seem like the ultimate paradise. By the time the battle is underway the skies have darkened with smoke, gunfire and fire covering the landscape, creating a massive contrast. With the music from before being masked by the sounds of battle.

Color Schemes

Although Battlefield is a game centered around the players experience and enjoyment, when it decides to set it newest installment in a historical time period it intends to be as historically accurate as possible – of course some things are stretched to keep the original statement true.
Set in 1945 Iwo Jima, an island in Japan, everything from the weaponry to the uniforms seem to be correct, when comparing images taken to screenshots from in game and the trailer.

Battlefield trailers are renowned for its use of music, the music in the War in the Pacific trailer fits it perfectly, the slow build up fit seamlessly with the shots of the soldiers preparing for battle. Then as the song breaks into the chorus the game play and fighting kicks off.

Even though the game play seen in this trailer is minimal it captures what the player will be experiencing by showing the point of view of the foot soldiers and the pilots, as seen here

Historical events

The trailer showcases the battles on Iwo jima in 1945 near the end of the second world war, this is when the United States Marine Corps and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army during.

A key historical photo was also taken during the final stages of the battle, its a photograph of six United States Marines raising the US flag atop Mount Suribachi.
